Casa Branca's atelier holds a trove of antique and vintage pieces, many of which are perfect options for reupholstery in a fresh fabric. When shopping for your next treasure, remember that something you thought wasn't your style—or didn't quite fit your home—can be reborn with entirely new life. A favorite fabric can seamlessly tailor a piece to your personal taste and lifestyle, while honoring its history.
The earlier upholstery appears in Ancient Egypt, with animal skins stetched across simple wood frames and leather cushions stuffed with horsehair or down. High-end Medieval furniture makers covered anything they could nail down with tapestry and textiles—sofas, chairs, even cabinetry doors. From there it was off to the races, and we're still reworking many of those beloved pieces today. From 18th-century salons to modern interiors, reupholstery remains the bridge between design we love, past and present.
