The artist’s sculptural objects reflect her observations of beauty in the natural world, from seaweed washed ashore to freshly fallen palm branches, transforming quiet moments into lasting focal points.

Kass received a BFA from the Columbus College of Art & Design and an MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art. Prior to founding Kass O’Brien Ceramics, she spent two decades as an elementary school art teacher, during which time she shared her love and appreciation for all mediums. Kass’ studios are located in West Palm Beach, Florida and Lake Forest, Illinois. ✤ Q & A ✤ 

How has your artistic style developed over the years?

My artistic style has changed tremendously over the last 20 years. I went from monochromatic to full color. There seemed to be such a dreary aspect to my art, and now all I want to express is joy. 

Favorite artists?

Anselm Kiefer and Willem de Kooning.

Where do you find inspiration?

I find inspiration everywhere but mostly when I’m outside, whether in gardens or forests, while fishing or running trails. I love to study leaves, flowers, and their movement, as well as look at books and old decorative pieces - they always give me a spark of creativity. 

Favorite Museum?

The Norton Museum of Art, of course! And going through the decorative arts section at The Metropolitan Museum of Art is so much fun.

Any advice for budding artists?

Draw and create everyday! Keep a sketch diary, and always believe in yourself.

To you, what makes a house a home?

To me, this is so important… pieces around you that are filled with memories and love...  a sense of character that reflects who you are… family photos, and lots and lots of laughter!
