The Most Important Piece of Furniture You'll Ever Buy
For anyone who happened to catch the recent New York Times story about the most important furniture of the last century, you may have noticed one thing— people love CHAIRS. Our universal interest for individualized seating seems to have made more of an impact on the design community at large than other specific piece of furnishing. As we walked through the decades, from Billy Baldwin's reinvention of the Victorian slipper chair, to Le Corbusier’s monastic box stool, to Philippe Starck’s Louis Ghost (or Alessandra’s own favorite iconic vintage— an original Saarinen Executive Armchair), we were reminded just how many ways there are to reinterpret a classic, unearth something entirely new, or go back to the basics (which can be anything but basic!).
Is it their versatility? The fact that you can always squeeze just One. More. Chair. into your home if you’re dying to have it? Perhaps it’s that an accent chair is the perfect place to try a daring color scheme, wild fabric, or style genre you’re ready to experiment with. At Casa Branca, playing with that eclectic melange is the most fun for us, and we’ve made it our mission to keep mixing it up with all the treasures we can unearth.
The choice of a chair is an opportunity to bring tremendous character to an interior— they ARE the spice of a room. Whether you choose a midcentury Danish or an 18thc French Fauteuil, it will completely change the way you see a room.
Chairs are so expressive! They often make me think they have their own personalities, often representing the period in which they were designed— upright and straightforward like a Danish chair, or relaxed and sensual like a French Louis XV chair.
