✤ Q & A ✤
How are you enjoying the transition to Palm Beach?
It was wonderful of Kemble Interiors to let me move down to our Florida office! We now have two children and my parents live nearby. We are so happy here and I feel very grateful to have been able to learn and observe the leadership and creativity of both Celerie and Mimi (mother/daughter principals of Kemble Interiors).
What is your go-to hostess gift?
A bottle of wine from West Palm Wine Co, they have a great selection of natural wines.
What is your signature cocktail or meal for entertaining?
I wish I could cook, it is a skill that I so admire. Between my design work and having two small children, my husband has taken over all food preparation, which is a wonderful quality in a husband—maybe the best quality a husband could have!
What made you choose Casa Branca for these spaces?
So many of the fabrics offer colors that are clear and not the least bit dreary. They are the type of colors that look beautiful in a sun drenched Florida room!
Where do you draw your inspiration from?
I have an insatiable appetite for visual references of architectural and design details — my camera roll is filled with screenshots and pictures of moments I have wanted to save and come back to and I organize them in albums for each project. I love to travel and visit houses, museums, and important architectural sites and my husband will appease me but jokes his favorite word in Italian is Uscita and Sortie in French. I find so many good details on Instagram - I love when I see a designer nail all of the elements in an unerring balance of color, pattern and sourcing.
Favorite scent for the home?
My favorite scent is waking up to the smell of coffee brewing and breakfast cooking. When I was growing up, my mother loved to make a big breakfast on the weekends, and this smell is entirely tied to nostalgia and sentimentality for me!
Tips for designing with color and pattern?
Mixing patterns is a balance of scale. You can look to cultures that have a tradition of pattern mixing, for example, the textiles of India, or the tiles of Portugal. For color, I think the best thing to do is sample everything. As designers, we know that samples are available for most things, but a layperson may not know to gather samples and put them side by side for close comparison. For example, it's important that whites are close in tone; if you have a bright white next to a more gray white, the gray white can feel dingy.
Fun design tip for refreshing your space for the new year?
Reframe a piece of art —the right frame can make a world of difference. An old-world painting in a clean-lined frame with a sliver of negative space can bring a tension of old and new that will delight you! Or buy new lampshades in a fabric or material that feels complimentary and thoughtful. Color can be the thread though a room in small accents that bring peace to us on a subliminal level. These are the details that make people feel good in a space.
Favorite Casa Branca fabric, wallpaper, or item. :)
I love theVimini patternin Powder. It almost reads as a solid from far away, but on closer inspection has beautiful variation.
