A Pair of 19th Century Chinese Rouleau Famille Verte Lamps

$7,500

These converted vases have cylindrical bodies tapering at the bottom and rising to an angled shoulder that supports a straight neck with cupped rim. The is body intricately decorated with panels depicting scenes of immortals playing games with further smaller panels of native tree foliage, surrounded by butterflies, yellow enamel decoration and geometric borders.

The Famille verte style was first used in the Kangxi period around 1680 and uses different shades of green with other overglaze colors in its design. It developed from the wucai (five colors) technique, which combines an underglaze of cobalt blue with with iron red and other colors in the overglaze. Famille verte enamels are either painted on the unglazed ceramic (biscuit) with no underglaze blue, or over high-fired glaze, producing wares of different appearances. Wares with enamel painted on the biscuit usually have a solid-color ground such as yellow, black or green, while those painted over the glaze may have a white ground, such as these fine examples. Occasionally both underglaze and overglaze blue may be seen in the same object. The firing to fuse the enamels was done at a relatively low temperature.
